OSU Libraries’ Research and Innovative Services Department (RIS) invites you to join us in a pilot project on “environmental scanning.” One of our goals for the year is to develop a process to investigate emerging trends based on a topic and disseminate our findings. Initially we each scanned a segment of the library universe (government and funding, education, technology, etc.) by perusing articles, web pages, blogs and more. From that we identified suggested topics that we might investigate in more depth together. “The future of the journal” is our first e-scan focus topic that we will be presenting in a blog series over the next few weeks. Future focus topic series are in the works for 2010.
In the course of discussing how RIS might do this team exercise we concluded that using different tools for “communicating” to different audiences are needed. Within our department we are using a Google Groups page to share items we discover so that we can comment on these among ourselves before summarizing our findings for a wider audience — you, the staff and faculty at OSU Libraries. To do that we elected to start this “NextGen Libraries at OSU” blog. We recognize that we are not experts on these topics and wanted to provide a forum for you to provide your insights by commenting on the blog postings. We want your feedback because we know that you each work with aspects of the topics we investigate.
Following the open comments period we plan to summarize our posts and your feedback in a single blog “page” on each e-scan topic and perhaps in some other format for distribution to other audiences.
So please subscribe to this blog and comment on these posts. Provide insights and comment on the blog postings.
